ONE MINUTE

One Minute

All I ever asked was for the world to stop turning.
For one,
Fleeting minute.
I wanted to hear the cars fly by my window,
Paving way to their next adventure,
Still enjoying the ride.
The hum of the heater,
Hushed footsteps meeting the old creaky floorboards.
All I asked for was one minute,
So that the world could stop turning.
But I didn’t expect it to last so long.
Father’s cherished mask begins to break;
Never-ending hours at the hospital,
He comes home to fall asleep in his chair,
Dreaming to escape a reality like this.
Mother can no longer ride the subway,
Everyday when she went to work.
The conductor can almost hear the chatter and stories shared,
Of the ones,
Like mother,
Who are no longer there.
I never thought it would be this long,
Until all I want is a hug.
Just because I could
Be in someone’s warm embrace,
Holding on just a little too tight,
Hoping I’ll never have to let go.
All I asked was for the world to stop turning.
For one,
Fleeting moment.
But I didn’t expect it to last so long.
We’re stuck in the stillness;
The birds still sing in their never-ending chorus,
The breeze still dances along the sky,
Yet here we lie,
In the midst of it all:
Seems as if no hope in sight.
Eventually,
The timer will ring,
And our minute will be up.
As you continue to lie here,
And watch the clock run,
Will you stand up to fight,
Or wait for this everlasting minute,
To finally be done?

Shhh!
